Stormwater Harvesting

Every year tremendous amounts of stormwater runoff is flushed down traditional systems, which end up contaminating natural waterways with gross and dissolved pollutants. Atlantis provides viable alternatives that completely replace antiquated systems, providing a sustainable solution with the added benefit of immediate reuse of clean water. This is a major advantage for communities experiencing low rainfall or water restrictions.

Ecological Channels

The Atlantis Ecological Channel Systems are based on permeable sub surface waterways that restore water quality and bring back the natural environment. The Atlantis Ecological Channel Systems uses the modular Ecological Tank System to provide a unique way of working with nature to solve the enormous problems currently associated with open concrete channels.

Open concrete channels are currently one of the main methods of transporting large quantities of storm water for discharge into our oceans. Open channels are used prolifically in the urban landscape even though they are considered unsafe with frequent accidents resulting in injuries and mortalities. Channels are also a breeding ground for vermin and vector that also endanger human health. In addition to the health and safety problem large concrete channels take up vast areas of land and have a negative impact on the amenity of the area.

With the Atlantis Channel System being a sub surface system these problems with open concrete channels are rectified. The permeable channel system is designed to follow the inherent contours of the landform emulating the flow of a natural waterway. The curvilinear channel design creates vertical flow, turbulence and reduces the overall flow velocity while increasing the self cleansing capacity of the channel bed. The design of the modules that make up the channel system oxygenates through the systems vortex creation, which recharges dissolved oxygen and enhances water quality. This creates healthy aerobic conditions.

By replacing open concrete channels with Atlantis Ecological Channel Systems, cities can now benefit from increased environmental amenities, greater recreational space and healthier conditions by using the vast tracts of land once given over to rapid flowing concrete channels.

The Atlantis Ecological Channel Systems conceal stormwater channels underground that like natural groundwater aquifers are hidden from direct sunlight and ultra-violet radiation.

Water is collected in the channel system after being filtered through Atlantis Ecosoils, avoiding the collection and concentration of pollutants and restoring natural aquifers. The permeable walled channels allow interaction of water with soils, increasing the aerobic capacity of the channel. The result is minimal quantities of healthy, clean water being dispersed to rivers and oceans and a healthy, safe, pollution free, aesthetically pleasing environment for the city.

Leachate Collection System

Three times more efficient than traditional leach drains. The Atlantis Leach Drain was designed to replace gravel and pipe leach systems. The Atlantis Leach System is over three times more efficient in leaching, faster to install and more reliable than these traditional gravel systems. Modular, lightweight & easy to install.

The Atlantis Leach System is a modular system of polypropylene tanks connected in series. The lightweight tanks are assembled on site and easily positioned in the trench and clipped together. The effluent pipe is connected prior to the drain being covered on top, sides and ends with Atlantis Hydronet woven geotextile. After backfilling with clean sand, the drain is ready for use.

Water Sensitive Urban Design

With the introduction of the Atlantis System into mains tream urban development, ecologically sustainable development can be achieved to the expectations of the community and the satisfaction of the developer. The principle behind the Atlantis System is to capture, filter and clean storm water where it falls, encouraging retention and infiltration as opposed to runoff and drainage.

In a typical system installation each house has an infiltration tank installed with around 5,000 litres capacity per site. In a green fields development site the Atlantis Ecological Tanks are installed prior to the construction of the dwellings. The tanks are located under landscaped areas or gardens, which improves the aesthetics of the housing blocks in contrast to traditional above ground concrete detention tanks.

Located around 500 mm from the surface the high load bearing capacity of the Atlantis Ecological Tanks enables large machinery such as D7 bulldozers, which are needed to excavate a new site, to operate unimpeded during earthworks and construction. The ability of the tanks to be accurately installed in low fall situations ensures efficient connection and performance following house construction.

Stormwater run-off from roofs initially passes through an Atlantis Filtration Unit to remove gross and dissolved pollutants and then into the Atlantis Ecological Tank, which further filters the water. The Atlantis Stormwater Re-use Systems and the Atlantis Infiltration Tank System are alternatives that can be applied to green field developments and brown field sites, which then can be re-used and/or allowed to infiltrate into the subsoil. Clean filtered stormwater from the Atlantis system permeates through the subsoils recharging underground aquifers that feed local waterways.

In large storm events an overflow system diverts excess water to an appropriate outlet such as a detention basin. Treated water discharge from Atlantis tanks is clean and consequently does not present a contamination risk. Specific vegetation types that are part of the Atlantis system are used for evapo-transpiration. For example strategic planting of specific tree species can consume up to 3,000 litres of water per day. This reduces absolute reliance on installed water management systems.

In addition to providing an ecological solution the main advantages of the Atlantis systems are that they are modular and able to suit almost every situation whether it be collection, treatment or storage. Because it is a sub surface system it also provides savings to developers by freeing up space otherwise required for sumps and above ground detention tanks.
The Atlantis Ecological Tank Systems provide a best practice system for managing stormwater run-off, collection, re-use, discharge and aquifer recharge that is a model breakthrough for ecologically sustainable and cost effective suburban development.

Atlantis Detention Tank System

The Atlantis Detention System is a cost effective solution that can also address water quality. The system offers flexible design options saving installation time and site access delays.

The Atlantis Filtration Unit captures and cleans roof water before entry into the storage area (Atlantis Matrix Tank Module). Water is slowly discharged through the discharge control unit. Applications include developments that need to meet Local Council Stormwater requirements.
